LOS ANGELES If you were one of the more than 1.8 million voters who pressured General Motors into building the Chevrolet Beat concept, you should be smiling right about now. The automaker said on Wednesday at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show that the Beat will hit the market in mid-2009. The bad news is that it likely won’t be coming to North America.
-->Chevrolet promises that its 2008 Tahoe Hybrid will boost its lead as the most fuel-efficient large SUV on the market. The 2-Mode Hybrid, Chevrolet says, will deliver 21 mpg in city driving, a boost of 50 percent over the standard Tahoe with a gas-only 5.3-liter V-8. In highway driving the Tahoe Hybrid will get 30-percent better fuel economy than the conventional Tahoe, GM says.

Alpha is designed mainly to underpin a sub- CTS -size Cadillac , crucial to the brand’s European offensive, but GM needs to build a volume car off the platform to make it pay off, and the car will be a Chevy sedan.

The announcement was made on November 14 by the brand’s general manager, Ed Peper, who spoke at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. Similar in size to the Aveo, the Beat was one of the three concept cars unveiled by GM earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, along with the Trax and Groove. This one boasts a modern, tuning-inspired design.

The Silverado Hybrid, which will be available only in crew cab configuration, gets a claimed 40 percent increase in city fuel economy, and 25 percent increase in overall fuel mileage, compared with comparable trucks with conventional powertrains. In the Two Mode, an electrically variable transmission with two electric motors channels power to the wheels.

The Chevrolet Equinox uses a hydrogen fuel cell to power an electric motor to propel the car and for 33 months from next year onwards, hundreds of test drivers from New York, California and Washington D.C.

The two-wheel-drive version of the full-size SUV will be priced at $50,490, including a $900 destination charge. The four-wheel-drive version will cost $53,295, also including destination. GM says approval of a federal tax credit for the hybrid SUVs is pending.
